The Healing Power Of Horses

Equine Therapy | Reiki with the herd | Retreats | Workshops | Accommodation

Equine-Assisted Wellness

Horses are deeply attuned to human emotion. They respond to subtle shifts in our thoughts, feelings and nervous system state, often reflecting what we may not yet consciously see. In their presence, change can feel gentle yet profound — a settling of the body, a new clarity, a quiet return to yourself.

Our equine-assisted experiences offer a calm, gentle, grounded space for self-discovery and emotional healing. Working alongside our intuitive herd in nature, you’re invited to slow down, reconnect and explore what is ready to shift.

This holistic healing approach supports nervous system regulation, emotional balance and authentic personal growth. Surrounded by land, space and horses, healing unfolds naturally — at your pace, in your own way.

Horses, with their gentle strength and intuitive grace, offer a therapeutic alliance that transcends spoken words. In the quiet presence of a horse, healing becomes a silent conversation between two souls, a journey towards inner peace guided by the wisdom of a gentle spirit.

Healing with horses in Australia

With their magnetic beauty and large physical size, horses have attracted mankind for centuries. They are predominately prey animals which means their senses are extremely developed, and they are acutely aware of their environment. They have incredible hearing, and can hear our heart beat from just over a metre away. A herd will synchronise their heartbeats to each other to help them sense danger more quickly. They live in the moment and as such are perfect teachers of mindfulness, trust, respect and compassion.

Horses are innately kind and loving and want to help us heal. They offer us non-judgemental, unconditional love and support, and they will voluntarily offer us energy healing. Horses encourage us to develop calmness, self-awareness and connection.

They react to the slightest changes in their environment – which includes us! There’s no hiding from them! They read things about us we may be unaware of, and respond to our body language and energy with immediate, non-judgemental responses. Through their reactions, we can learn about ourselves and shift how we show up in the world.

Engaging with the healing power of horses can be tremendously potent and deeply transformational. We can heal childhood traumas, trapped emotions, and find resolution to life’s stressors.

Ways To Work With Our Herd – for Individuals

The horses at Highlands Centre For Healing are partners in this work. Each offering reflects a different way of engaging with their presence, their energy and the living field of this land.

Somatic Energy Healing With Horses

Ground-based, client-led sessions held within the living energy field of the herd.

Sessions begin by listening to your story, your body, and what is present for you in this moment. From there, Soo works in attunement with you, the horses, and the natural environment, allowing the session to unfold organically. The horses may engage directly or subtly, individually or together. At other times, the guidance comes through your own body’s awareness, the land, or the wider field of nature.

These sessions often support the release of stuck or held energy and invite a return to greater coherence, embodiment, and freedom — helping you step into the next vibrant expression of yourself.

For those seeking: Deep emotional release, nervous system regulation, reconnection with self, support through grief, anxiety, overwhelm or life transitions.

Session length: 60 minutes
Suitable for: Ages 18+, no prior horse experience needed

Reiki With The Herd

A 90-minute energy healing session held within the living presence of the herd and the surrounding natural environment.

Soo, a Level II Tanran Reiki Practitioner, sets up and grounds the session, creating a living energetic space that invites in the herd, ancestors, spirit guides, wildlife and the surrounding natural environment.

You can choose whether to lie on the massage table, sit in a chair, or remain standing. Most participants choose to lie down.

These are energetic sessions — still, attuned, and restorative. The horses act as co-channels, creating a subtle, intuitive field for balance, alignment, and energetic restoration. The herd may sometimes guide the experience into a more therapeutic or verbal process. Gentle insights, guidance, or reflections may emerge naturally, supporting deeper attunement, release, and alignment.

Each session is unique, attuned to your needs and the intelligence of the herd and land.

For those seeking: Deep relaxation, energetic balance, relief from physical or emotional stress, rest for an overstimulated nervous system.

Session length: 90 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

Why horses? What do they offer in therapy that’s unique?

Horses read our energy and easily pick up on human emotions. They don’t judge, they just “get” you. Their large guts and hearts are able to co-regulate our nervous systems and, as natural-born Reiki Masters, they are also able to offer energy healing.

Clinical research has shown that being in close proximity to horses changes human brain wave patterns and heart rate!  Plus, horses teach mutual respect, trust, and emotional intelligence, creating an environment for rapid self-learning.

Do I need prior experience with horses?

Not at all. For the healing sessions, no prior experience with horses is required. Sessions are held at your pace, with choice in every moment. All sessions are ground-based — no riding.

Is this meant to replace my doctor or therapist?

No. Think of these sessions as a complement to any medical or therapeutic advice you’re currently following. This work offers a fresh, holistic perspective on well-being, but always keep your medical specialist in the loop.

While Soo is a registered, qualified counsellor and trauma-trained somatic practitioner, she is not a medical specialist and does not diagnose, categorise, judge, advise, assess, or fix.

How many sessinos will I need?

Start with one. From there, you’ll know what feels right for you. There is no prescribed program or fixed number of sessions. This work is client-led and respects your own pace and rhythm.

Can I visit the horses if I'm staying in your accommodation?

Yes. Guests staying at The Stables or Gang Gang Hideaway are welcome to spend time in the presence of the herd during their stay. However, we do ask that you only do so when Soo is present. Many people find this deeply restful, even without a formal session.
