Healing Retreat Near Sydney

Ground-Based Healing in the Southern Highlands

When the noise of Sydney becomes too much, and the pace leaves your nervous system wired and your body exhausted, there’s a place less than two hours away where the rhythm shifts.

Highlands Centre for Healing sits on 106 acres in Moss Vale, in the heart of the Southern Highlands. The land backs onto Meryla Flora Reserve where the air is cooler, even in summer.

On the land, the horses move freely, we experience a daily true dawn chorus And there’s space—real space—to finally stop performing.

This is a healing retreat near Sydney, but it’s not what you might expect. There’s no luxury spa. No wellness itinerary. No fixing. Just Soo, the horses, and the quiet intelligence of land that knows how to hold you.

This isn’t just another NSW wellness retreat; it’s a transformative experience that stays with you forever.

Why Sydneysiders Make the Drive to Moss Vale

If you live in Sydney—whether it’s the Inner West, the Eastern Suburbs, the Northern Beaches, or the Lower North Shore—you know the cost of constant output. The commute. The crowds. The pressure to keep moving, producing, performing.

Your nervous system knows it, too. Even if your calendar is full and your life looks successful, something inside you is asking for a different frequency.

Many who come to Highlands Centre describe it this way:

The body won’t settle, no matter how much yoga or meditation you do
Sleep is fractured, the mind loops, and overwhelm is the baseline
You’ve done the therapy, read the books, tried the techniques—and still, something feels unresolved
You’re holding grief, trauma, or stress that lives deeper than words can reach
You feel safer with animals than in rooms full of people

The drive from Sydney to the Southern Highlands is short in distance but vast in what it offers. You leave the tunnel of the M5, the sprawl of the suburbs, the hum of the city. You climb in altitude. And somewhere between Picton and Mittagong, your shoulders (and thermometer) drop.

What This Retreat Offers

A person with curly gray hair and glasses gently nuzzles with a white and brown horse outdoors, surrounded by trees and other horses in a fenced area.

Horse-Assisted Healing (Ground-Based)

The 15 horses at Highlands Centre are not therapy animals in the traditional sense. They don’t perform tasks. They don’t follow a program. They are sentient, energetic beings who respond to what’s happening in your nervous system.

Sessions are ground-based. No riding. Just presence. Breathe. And the profound simplicity of being seen by a 500-kilogram mirror who reflects safety, regulation, and choice.

This work is sometimes called equine therapy, and while that’s a term many search for, at HCFH it’s more accurately described as equine-assisted, somatic, relational work. The horses aren’t tools.

They’re partners. And in Soo’s experience, they usually know what your body needs before your mind does.

Somatic Energy Healing with Soo

60-minute sessions that integrate somatic awareness, energy work, and the presence of the land and horses. This is trauma-informed healing that honors your pace, your story, and the intelligence of your nervous system.

Soo doesn’t pathologise. She doesn’t fix. She holds space while your body remembers what coherence feels like. People who’ve been through years of talk therapy find that this work reaches the places words can’t.

A woman in a blue-green dress sits on a colorful blanket outdoors, gently touching foreheads with a white horse wearing a fly mask. Two other horses, also wearing fly masks, stand nearby under a shaded shelter.

Reiki With The Herd

90 minutes of energy healing conducted outdoors with the horse herd. This is deep, embodied work. You’ll be held in a field of presence as Soo channels healing energyand the horses offer their quiet co-regulation. Energy blocks clear.

The body softens. And something ancient and wise begins to remember itself.

Personalised Retreat Options

If you’re traveling from Sydney, you might choose a single session to begin. Or you might gift yourself a few days—time to walk the land, sit with the horses, and let the nervous system recalibrate in the safety of slowness.

Soo’s “design your own retreat” approach means you decide the structure. You choose the rhythm. There’s no one-size-fits-all program. Just held space and the medicine of nature.

A group of people sits in a circle on white chairs outdoors under a large tree, listening to a standing speaker. Sunlight filters through the leaves, and a black and white dog stands nearby.

The Southern Highlands: Sydney's Hinterland

Moss Vale is the geographical heart of the Southern Highlands, a region known for its heritage towns, cool-climate gardens, and centuries-old trees. This is Gundungurra and Dharawal Country, and the land carries a presence that’s older than words.

The Highlands are dotted with villages like Bowral, Berrima, Bundanoon, and Robertson. Each has its own character. Bowral offers galleries, antique stores, and the famous Corbett Gardens. Berrima is one of Australia’s best-preserved Georgian villages. Bundanoon is the gateway to Morton National Park and the Glow Worm Glen. Robertson sits on the Illawarra escarpment, famous for its mist, its dairy farms, and its role in the film Babe.

This region has long been a refuge for Sydney’s weary. It’s close enough for a day trip but feels like a different world. The altitude brings crisp mornings and the smell of wood smoke in winter. The light moves differently across the paddocks. And the quiet here isn’t empty—it’s full of birdsong, wind, and the slow wisdom of trees.

If you’ve been living at Sydney’s pace—Bondi, Newtown, Manly, Surry Hills, Parramatta—the spaciousness of the NSW Southern Highlands will reset something fundamental.

How to Get Here from Sydney

Four people stand in a large indoor arena watching several horses, some lying down and some standing, on a sandy surface under a high metal roof with sunlight streaming in.

By Car

Take the M5 Motorway south from Sydney, merge onto the Hume Motorway (M31), and exit at Moss Vale. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic.

The drive itself becomes part of the transition—from urban density to rolling farmland, from noise to the wide Southern Highlands sky.

RENEW YOU at HCFH

By Train

NSW TrainLink operates regular services from Sydney Central to Moss Vale. The journey takes approximately 2 hours. From Moss Vale station, it’s a short taxi or uber to the property.

Some guests prefer the train—it’s meditative, it’s unhurried, and it gives the nervous system time to shift gears.

Nearby Landmarks

Fitzroy Falls: 5 minutes south, part of Morton National Park, with walking tracks and escarpment views.
Wingecarribee Reservoir: A peaceful spot for reflection and birdwatching.
Bowral: 10 minutes , home to boutique shopping, cafes, and the Bradman Museum.
Berrima: 15 minutes , with sandstone architecture, artisan stores, and historic pubs.

This is a landscape that slows you down. That’s the point.

The Land

This property is alive. The land is part of the healing. Not as a backdrop, but as a presence. Many people say they feel held here before they even meet the horses.

Who Comes Here?

There’s no typical person. But there are common threads.

You might be:

Living with unresolved trauma, complex PTSD, or developmental trauma
Navigating chronic stress, burnout, or adrenal fatigue
Struggling with anxiety, panic, insomnia, or nervous system dysregulation
Grieving a loss—of a person, a version of yourself, or a life you thought you’d have
Sensing that your body holds wisdom your mind hasn’t caught up to yet
Seeking something beyond talk therapy—something embodied, relational, somatic

If you’ve been searching for “trauma retreat Sydney,” “equine therapy NSW,” “somatic healing Southern Highlands,” “nature-based healing near me,” or “healing with horses near Sydney,” your nervous system is likely calling you here.

Guided by Soo Woods

I didn’t learn this work from a textbook. I found it by needing it.

Growing up, the only places that felt genuinely safe were in nature and around animals. There was no judgement there, no expectation to be anything other than what I was in that moment.

Like many people, I spent years operating in stress patterns that felt normal at the time. Pushing through, staying functional, disconnecting when needed. It wasn’t until later that I began to understand how much the body holds, and how those patterns quietly shape everything.

Over the past decade, I’ve explored trauma-aware somatic work, energy healing, and nature-based approaches. But more than that, I’ve moved through it myself. I know what it takes to come out of survival mode, to release what’s been sitting under the surface, and to experience a different way of being that actually feels sustainable.

What I offer now isn’t a method or a fix. It’s a space. One where your nervous system can slow down, where nothing is forced, and where the process unfolds in its own time. The horses, the land, and the way the work is held all support that shift without needing to push for it.

If you feel drawn to this, reach out. We can have a simple conversation and see what feels right.

NATURE-BASED WELLNESS RETREATS FROM MELBOURNE

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the retreat from Sydney, and is it suitable for a short escape?

The retreat is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from Sydney, making it ideal for both day visits and overnight stays. Many guests come for a quick reset away from the city, while others choose to stay longer to fully unwind.

Is this a structured wellness retreat with a fixed schedule?

No. This is not a program-based retreat. There are no rigid schedules or group activities. Your time here is guided by your own pace, with optional sessions designed to support rest, regulation, and reconnection.

What makes this different from a typical wellness retreat near Sydney?

Most retreats focus on activities and outcomes. This space focuses on creating the right conditions for your nervous system to settle naturally. The work is grounded in presence, nature, and horse-assisted experiences rather than structured workshops or performance-driven practices.

Can I visit alone, or is this better suited for couples or groups?

Most guests come on their own. This is a highly personal experience, and solo visits often allow for deeper reflection and integration. That said, couples or small groups are welcome if they’re aligned with the intention of the space.

Do I need any prior experience with meditation, healing, or wellness practices?

No experience is required. Whether you’re completely new to this kind of work or have explored other modalities before, the sessions meet you where you are without expectations or prerequisites.

Sydney's Nervous Systems Are Calling

From the harbour to the mountains, from the northern beaches to the Sutherland Shire, Sydney is home to millions of people living at full throttle. High-functioning, capable, resilient people whose bodies are quietly asking for something different.

The Southern Highlands has always been a place of retreat. It’s been a sanctuary since long before Europeans arrived, and it continues to offer what the city cannot: slowness, spaciousness, and the kind of quiet that lets your nervous system remember it’s safe.

Highlands Centre for Healing is part of that lineage. Not a wellness brand. Not a program. Just a woman, a herd, and some very special Gundungurra Country that knows how to hold the things you’ve been carrying.
