Somatic Equine Therapy
Healing with Soo, the horses and the land
Will Ground-based Healing With Horses meet your needs?
This is the name Soo has given to her practice of combining trauma informed somatic education, and years of being with, being trained by, and healed by horses.
You may have found yourself here because life looks fine from the outside – you keep functioning, you keep caring for everyone else, you keep meeting deadlines, raising children, supporting clients, holding families together.
While neglecting yourself.
Underneath you’re exhausted. Your body never really relaxes, you find it difficult to rest, always wake tired, you overthink conversations, you carry anxiety you can’t explain, you feel disconnected from yourself.
You may struggle to make decisions, carry tension in your jaw, your shoulders, your gut. You might even consciously always be scanning for what could go wrong next.
Maybe you’ve spent years talking about what happened, yet your body still reacts as though it’s happening now.
Perhaps you feel disconnected from joy, cry unexpectedly, shut down during conflict, become overwhelmed by small things. Feel like you’ve lost who you are.
If any of this is familiar … you’re not alone.
I understand all this. And I’m here to help you leave it in the past.
“I’m passionate about helping you reclaim your authentic self.
Somatic Equine Therapy with the herd is a tremendously powerful and beautiful way to help you do this.”

WHAT DOES "SOMATIC" MEAN
The word somatic comes from the Ancient Greek word soma, meaning “of the body”.
Rather than working only through conversation, somatic approaches include what is happening inside your body – breath, sensations, tension, emotion, posture and nervous system responses.
Because many experiences aren’t stored as memories in the brain, they’re carried in the body.
Which is why understanding something intellectually often doesn’t create lasting change.
WHAT IS SOMATIC EQUINE THERAPY?
Equine therapy is a broad term people use for healing that involves horses.
At Highlands Centre for Healing, these session are ground-based and equine-assisted, meaning we work alongside horses rather than on horseback.
It’s called Somatic Equine Therapy because that’s exactly what it is — somatic, in relationship with horses, in relationship with your own body.
Horses don’t analyse us, they don’t care about our achievements.
They aren’t interested in our stories.
They respond only to what’s happening in the present moment.
Which makes them extraordinary partners for somatic work.
They notice what our bodies are communicating a long time before our minds do!
"This exquisite experience will forever remain in my heart"
Even with an understanding of the deep, transformational energy horses embody, my session with Soo and her herd surpassed my expectations in the most profound way.
After experiencing devastating loss, I arrived open and profoundly grateful. I left the session in awe of the vibrant lifeforce of the land and the horses – it was palpable.
Throughout the session Soo was deeply aware, responsive, supportive and in sacred communion with me, the horses and the land.
This exquisite experience will forever remain in my heart.

HOW THIS DIFFERS FROM TRADITIONAL EQUINE THERAPY
Traditional equine therapy programs often follows a structured model — set exercises, expected outcomes, sometimes a clinical framework layered over the top.
This isn’t that.
Somatic Equine Therapy is client-led.
Trauma-informed.
We move at your pace, with choice in every moment.
The horses aren’t tools for a technique — they’re partners in the sessions, responding to your nervous system the way they respond to each other’s: honestly, and without an agenda.
What Happens In A Session
Sessions are ground-based, and unfold gradually, always guided by your subconscious’ knowing of what you are ready for.
We begin by slowing down. There is no expectation to perform. No pressure to ‘get it right’.
You are guided through a short, simple breath and mindful practice to help you land in the present moment.
Usually we stand, but we can sit – on a chair, on the ground.
The horses choose whether, and how, they engage.
Often very little appears to happen on the outside, while something profound shifts interally.
One or more horses might stand close. Others might keep their distance. Both are information, not a wrong answer.
What emerges is held with spaciousness, attuned presence, respect, and consent — yours, and the horse’s.
Sometimes a horse will quietly walk over and stand beside someone who’s carrying enormous grief.
Sometimes the herd mirror our restlessness, the conflicting voices in our head.
Sometimes they’ll move away when we’re disconnected from ourselves.
Sometimes they role play different parts of us, or our family, or work colleagues.
Nothing is forced, the horses are always at liberty (free to move, leave).
And they are definitely not trained for this.
The horses simply respond, as horses naturally do, to the energy of our thoughts, words and feelings.
And that’s where the real gold lies.
Who This Experience Is For
These sessions tend to find people who are capable, often carers or healers themselves, and who look fine from the outside.
But internally, something isn’t right.
You might be constantly on, feel emotionally exhausted, live with chronic tension.
Live with that busy brain that never switches off. Overwhelm visits.
Or you may feel numb, have become disconnected from your joy.
You may over-give, people-please, never fully trust yourself.
Have tried counselling but something still feels missing … a sense that talking about it hasn’t been enough.
Grief that hasn’t found its shape yet.
Many people who come here have already done ‘the work’
They’ve read the books, been to counselling, they understand why they think the way they do
Yet their body still braces, they still anticipate threat, they still apologise too much, still struggle to say no
And still feel disconnected from themselves
Our nervous system learns through experience, and no amount of cognitive understanding can teach it or help it shift.
Somatic sessions gently help create new experiences of safety that the body can actually feel
You don’t need a diagnosis to be here.
You don’t need to know what you’re looking for.
Bring what’s true for you today, and let the horses, the land and I will meet you there.
What This Is – And What It Isn’t
This IS client-led, meaning your body’s capacity and consent guide the experience.
It’s for people seeking:
- Nervous system regulation
- Emotional clarity
- Boundary awareness
- Reconnection to instinct and body
- A felt experience rather than another conversation
- A return to self
It can complement counselling or therapeutic support.
This is a space where the wisdom of your body gets to lead for a while, with a herd that’s honest, and land that holds you without asking anything back.
Located near Bowral in NSW Southern Highlands.
This ISN’T psychotherapy, and it isn’t a replacement for it.
It isn’t:
- riding, or horsemanship lessons.
- a quick fix – and nothing about you needs fixing in the first place.
- about making the horses do anything
It definitely isn’t about reliving your trauma
You won’t be judged.
You won’t be pushed (but you may be nudged!)
You won’t be expected to share anything you’re not ready to share.
This is available in person only, not online.
From People Who Have Visited
My healing today with these horses was really profound, and in thinking back about it, the most beautiful thing is the love that they give. I just felt so much love from them, and their willingness to share it and step into my field and help me heal and release whatever I’ve got to release was just a beautiful experience. I’m so grateful to them and to you and to the beautiful energy that they and this place holds. So thank you so very much.

A Note From Soo
My earliest sense of safety and belonging didn’t come from people. It came from nature and animals. They offered a kind of presence and truth that felt steady, non-judging, and real.
Like many, I spent years navigating life in survival mode. Coping, pushing through, and unconsciously carrying the imprint of experiences I didn’t yet understand.
What I came to learn is that the body remembers everything — not just the big moments, but also the subtle, seemingly insignificant ones that quietly shape how we live, feel, and relate.
Over the past decade and more, I have immersed myself in understanding trauma, emotions, the nervous system, and holistic healing — not as theory, but as lived experience.
Through this journey, what became clear is that healing is not about fixing what is broken, but about releasing what no longer belongs and remembering what is already whole.
Working with horses, land, and the living field of nature is not something I chose so much as something I returned to. This work reflects a way of being — attuned, embodied, and deeply respectful of each person’s unique path back to coherence and truth.

SOMATIC EQUINE THERAPY NSW
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Somatic Equine Therapy the same as traditional equine therapy?
Equine therapy is the broad term people search for. Our version is a specific, ground-based approach that combines a trauma-informed somatic approach with sensitive horses who react and respond to the energy of our thoughts, words and feelings. There is no riding, and we don’t follow a fixed clinical model.
What age are somatic equine therapy sessions for?
Somatic energy healing with horses is for high functioning adults, 18yo+, who are seeking and open to change.
Do I need prior experience with horses?
No. And this isn’t about horsemanship. It’s about presence — yours and theirs.
We welcome people with no horse experience, a fear of horses, or years of loving experience.
Who can benefit from somatic equine therapy?
Anyone experiencing emotional dysregulation – stress, anxiety, trauma, grief, burnout, feeling stuck, life transitions or overwhelm can benefit. It’s also really powerful for personal growth, leadership development and nervous system regulation.
How long is a somatic equine therapy session?
Sessions at Highlands Centre For Healing run for approximately 60 minutes. Longer immersive experiences and retreat formats are also available.
How does a somatic equine therapy session with horses differ to equine therapy?
Equine therapy usually follows procedures and structured approaches, with outcome goals in mind. There are mounted approaches (which involve riding), and ground-based approaches (working alongside the horse).
Somatic energy healing with the horses works with your body, your nervous system. It is ground-based only, trauma-informed and outcomes are undefined.
What happens during somatic equine therapy sessions?
At Highlands Centre For Healing, sessions are ground-based and may include somatic awareness, observation, mindful interaction, and reflective conversation. There is no riding. Our focus is safety, presence, relational awareness and coherence.
How does somatic equine therapy help with trauma?
Trauma is held in the nervous system and body. Horses are exquisitely sensitive to subtle shifts in energy and regulation, offering immediate, non-verbal feedback that brings unconscious patterns into awareness.
In this grounded relational space, clients can practise safety, boundaries and co-regulation in real time. Our horses also support the release of held or stagnant energy, offering healing and a restoration to flow, balance and a renewed sense of vitality.
Don’t therapy horses burn out?
Yes — they absolutely can if they are overworked, overhandled, or given no choice. At Highlands Centre for Healing, the wellbeing of our herd comes first. We have 15 horses who live as a herd with ample space to move, rest, graze, roll, and regulate naturally. Sessions are held at liberty — the horses are not haltered or required to participate. They are free to approach, stay, or walk away at any time. Sometimes one horse engages in a session, sometimes several, and sometimes very little happens externally at all. Their involvement is always voluntary.
Because they have choice, space, social connection, bodywork treatments, and time between sessions, they are able to restore themselves and remain balanced. Their autonomy is not just respected — it is foundational to how we work.
