![how to deal with emotional trauma triggers](https://highlandscentreforhealing.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/keeping-busy-blg.png)
Keeping busy is the same as any other addiction – alcohol, drugs, food, behavioural habits like scrolling on social media.
Why?
Because all of these act as a form of avoidance.
Avoidance of what?
Avoidance of painful memories, feelings, emotions, unresolved issues associated with past traumas.
And what is trauma?
Anything that has put YOUR system into overwhelm.
And I emphasise YOUR as we are all different, and what will affect one of us will not necessarily affect the other.
By keeping busy we distract ourselves, and avoid downtime when the distressing thoughts, feelings, flashbacks or feelings of vulnerability might resurface.
This is due to an inability to sit with, to be with, the sensations in our bodies
Keeping busy is an intelligent coping mechanism (as are any other addictions.) It may help temporarily reduce anxiety and help us keep a sense of control over our environment.
BUT it can also lead to burnout, chronic stress, physical issues and a disconnection from our own emotional needs.
Over time, this pattern of keeping busy can delay us from true healing, prevent us from fully processing our trauma and so keep us from experiencing a peaceful, calm and joy filled life.
We need to allow space, time and stillness for introspection and recovery.
We need to find supporting space and people to hold us while we process what deeply hurt us.
When we experience life incapable of crying, or encompassing full joy, of healthily expressing our anger, or admitting our fear
We end up piling up layer upon layer of trapped energy, trapped emotion, trapped sensation
And when we learn to start embracing, allowing and releasing these energies healing starts to happen
In trauma recovery, finding balance is key. Gradually making space to start to feel sensations in the body, emotions (though not all sensations can be adequately labelled as emotions).
A good trauma therapist will support you in a way that does not allow re-traumatisation to occur. They will have a wealth of ‘tools’ through which to do so.
Sitting with challenging sensations can be uncomfortable, may even be painful.
But the reality is that no sensation, no wave of energy that passes through our being, lasts forever.
You don’t have to process your trauma alone
When facing the journey through trauma, it is common to feel alone.
The thought of overwhelming emotions can cause fear.
But keep in mind, you don’t have to navigate these turbulent waters alone.
And a good trauma therapist will not allow you to meet overwhelm again.
The weight of trauma – heavy and burdensome – isn’t meant to be carried on a single pair of shoulders. You need to find support.
