Equine Therapy: How Horses Are Healers
A man and a horse in a field at sunset, with the sun's glow creating silhouettes

In a world where conventional therapy rooms can sometimes feel confining, there is a space where the ceiling is as high as the sky and the walls are the distant horizons. Here, amidst the serene beauty of nature, your journey to healing is accompanied by the soft sounds of wildlife and the companionship of one of the most empathic creatures known to mankind: horses.

This is the essence of equine therapy.

Equine therapy, also known as equine-assisted therapy or equine facilitated learning, is a unique form of experiential therapy that harnesses the unparalleled sensitivity and powerful presence of horses to facilitate healing. It’s an opportunity to step into an expansive outdoor arena where healing takes on a new, dynamic form.

Keep in mind a person doesn’t “use” a horse for their therapy; instead, they form a relationship with them. The horse’s sensitivity to our emotions and reactions provides a mirror to our own emotional states and behaviour, helping us understand ourselves better.

What is equine therapy?

There are differences between Equine Therapy and Equine Assisted/Facilitated Learning. The former includes the involvement of a trained and qualified mental health practitioner who may also have experience working with trauma or alternative therapies.

At their core, equine therapies involve interactive activities with horses designed to improve the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of individuals. Unlike traditional therapeutic settings, they offer a dynamic environment where participants can engage with these majestic animals under the guidance of holistic healers and therapists

Horses can act as mirrors to our souls. With their acute sensitivity and non-verbal communication, they reflect and respond to human emotions in ways that deepen our understanding of ourselves. They provide immediate feedback that therapists can use to guide the healing process. This interaction encourages individuals to explore their emotions, behaviours, and patterns in a setting that is both grounding and nurturing.

Equine therapy is particularly impactful for individuals facing emotional and psychological challenges. It’s a testament to the power of connection – a reminder that sometimes, the most profound healing comes from simply being understood and accepted by another living soul.

Equine Therapy at Highlands Centre For Healing incorporates a somatic approach to healing trauma, supporting participants in healing and releasing undigested life experiences from the past allowing them to step into a new, fresh and unencumbered future.

The healing power of horses

Horses, with their majestic presence and intuitive nature, possess an almost magical ability to facilitate healing in humans. They’re incredibly sensitive creatures, capable of mirroring and responding to human emotions. This unique characteristic makes them perfect partners in therapy. Their presence alone can have a calming effect, reducing stress, and promoting a sense of peace.

As naturally born Reiki Masters, the herd at Highlands Centre For Healing also offer energy healing through Reiki. This can occur in intended Reiki sessions, or be offered by them in Equine Therapy sessions. They know what we need more than we do!

Empathy and connection

The nonverbal communication established between a horse and a human can bridge gaps in understanding and expression that words sometimes cannot reach. This connection fosters a sense of being understood and accepted unconditionally.

Presence and mindfulness

These sentient beings require individuals to be fully engaged in the moment, pushing aside worries, anxieties, and distractions. This practice of mindfulness, facilitated by the need to attune to the horse’s movements and responses, can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Building confidence and self-esteem

Horses challenge individuals to step out of their comfort zones – whether through caring, walking alongside each other, or simply being near these large and powerful animals. Successfully navigating these challenges can lead to significant boosts in confidence and self-esteem.

For many, especially those dealing with trauma, abuse, or mental health issues, these achievements mark important milestones in their healing journey. The sense of accomplishment and the skills gained through these interactions can be transferred to other areas of life, fostering a more positive self-image and a belief in one’s own abilities.

A source of unconditional acceptance

Perhaps one of the most profound aspects of the healing power of horses is the unconditional acceptance they offer. Horses do not judge by the same social or aesthetic standards that people do; they respond to the sincerity and intention of the individuals they interact with.

For many facing judgement, criticism, or rejection in other areas of their lives, this acceptance is incredibly healing. It provides a sanctuary where individuals can truly be themselves, often for the first time in a long while, and experience the transformative power of being accepted without conditions.

Conditions that can be treated

Equine therapy, with its multifaceted approach to healing, offers a unique and powerful therapeutic option for a wide range of conditions. This therapy transcends conventional methods by providing an immersive, interactive experience that engages individuals on multiple levels – physical, psychological, and social.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): Individuals with ASD can greatly benefit from equine therapy due to its structured yet flexible approach. The sensory experience of interacting with a horse – touching its coat, feeling its movements, and even the responsibility of care – can help improve sensory integration and regulation.
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): The dynamic environment of equine therapy offers a unique way to improve focus, attention, and self-discipline. The need to remain attentive and responsive to a horse helps in practising mindfulness and concentration.
  • Depression and Anxiety: The bond formed with a horse can foster feelings of connection and belonging, counteracting feelings of isolation.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): The act of caring for a horse can be a grounding experience, helping individuals with PTSD to stay present and reduce hyper-vigilance. Building a trusting relationship with a horse can also serve as a powerful metaphor for rebuilding trust in relationships with others.
  • (Childhood) Trauma: Through somatic (of the body) exploration the imprints that life has left on us can be gently revealed and released. What many people do not recognise or understand is that we carry scars internally just as we do on the outside of our bodies. These internal scars are invisible … until horses help us find them.

Benefits of equine therapy

Equine therapy’s broad applicability across such a wide range of conditions underscores its value as a therapeutic modality. Its strength lies not only in the physical activities involved but also in the profound emotional and psychological benefits derived from the human-horse bond.

  • Physical benefits: Improve motor skills, balance, posture, and coordination.
  • Psychological benefits: Boost self-esteem, increase self-awareness, and enhance emotional regulation.
  • Social benefits: Equine therapy can also take place in group settings, offering opportunities to develop communication skills, build trust, and form meaningful relationships with both horses and peers. The collaborative nature of the therapy promotes teamwork and empathy, crucial skills in every walk of life.

Considerations

While equine therapy offers a wide array of benefits for individuals facing various conditions, it’s important to approach this option with an understanding of its limitations, costs, and accessibility issues. These factors can influence the feasibility and effectiveness of equine therapy for different individuals.

But as awareness grows and with it the demand for such services, hopefully, we will see increased efforts to make equine therapy more accessible and affordable for all who stand to benefit from its healing power.

Limitations

Equine therapy, like any therapeutic modality, is not a one-size-fits-all solution. The nature of equine therapy means that it is highly experiential and may not directly address specific psychological issues without being part of a broader therapeutic plan.

Other factors such as allergies to horses, certain physical disabilities, or extreme fear of animals could also limit participation. However, the horses at Highlands Centre For Healing have a history of working with those who are fearful, gently and progressively helping them learn to let go of their fears and instead hold onto love.

Cost

One of the significant barriers to accessing equine therapy is the cost. Maintaining horses and a facility suitable for therapy is expensive, and these costs are often reflected in the sessions. Payment options for equine therapy vary widely.

Accessibility

The geographical location of equine therapy centres can also limit accessibility. Most centres are located away from the main cities, requiring participants to travel significant distances for sessions. This can be particularly difficult for individuals without reliable transportation or those living in urban areas far from such facilities.
